DACA and Dream Act, Hope Rekindled

On November 6th, the Dreams of thousands of students in Maryland were given wings. Along with Deferred Action, the Dream Act opened the door to an affordable, higher education. Incredible, would probably be the word to describe this accomplishment. Only a few months before, Dreamers were still being put in maximum security jail cells and treated as if they had committed a crime by wanting to pursue a higher education.

However, much has yet to be seen. With the new influx of workers coming in through DACA, who will provide them with jobs? Most importantly, how can we help them reach their full potential and plug them into different resources such as internships, jobs, fellowships etc. Needless to say, with this economy, finding a job will be difficult for many of them; however, we are now able to fully explore the potential of class valedictorians, star-athletes, and other students by seeing how they compete in the work force. Most importantly, we have opened the door for them to reach toward their goals, and benefit their country. Likewise, we have closed the door to crime, violence, and shattered dreams.

The question then lies in whether they will face obstacles applying to these new jobs or gaining access to these universities. Will their applications be looked down at Universities because of their 'Dreamer' status or will their resumes be looked down upon when applying for a job? In the months to come, many instances will occur where DACA and Dream Act will have to prove whether an anti-discriminatory bill will be necessary to protect these students.

Regardless, it's a new beggining for many of these students and there is no better present than DACA and the Maryland Dream Act for them this Christmas. Let us hope for the best in the months to come and may thousands of these students take advantage of the new blessings in their lives.

#JSA

The biggest obstacle we have in our lives is ourselves. By overcoming our fears and empowering our hopes we slowly turn the wheels toward a brighter future for society. What we do with JSA is not our job, we aren't getting payed for it, it’s our passion. It's with this same passion for seeing justice in the word that we push forward and advocate for issues such as the Maryland Dream Act. Such issues need to be understood and recognized as social justice issues, as issues where your friends, your congregation, your teams, your schools, and most importantly YOU can make a change. Commit today to telling 10 people a week about "why the Dream act should pass" and by election day you will have told over 150 people which will potentially spread the word! The power to change this Dream Act battle is in each of our hands-- the biggest tool we can use in this race is ourselves. As we always say at #JSA " Be the change you want to see in the world..." because " an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". We push forward with a commitment to justice, honesty, and a promise to all those which are voiceless that WE MARCH ON TOWARD JUSTICE! #JSA

GET READY FOR OUR VOTER REGISTRATION CONCERT AUGUST 17th at the SIlVER SPRING CIVIC CENTER!!!!

#TEAM JSA:

It's a great day for a lot of us! On this Friday, June 15th, the Obama Administration announced a deferred action process for undocumented youth in the country! We would first like to thank God for putting his hand in the heart of politicians and guiding the various groups pushing for this. Thank you, also, TO ALL OF YOU, for continuing to believe in us, our cause, and hope for a better future.

We hope to continue working to keep politicians accountable. To help them see that sometimes decisions should not be just made on votes but what is intrinsically right. JSA will continue fighting for the Dream Act in Maryland, registering voters, holding politicians accountable, and fighting against injustices in our area. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Voter registration concert August 17th! ...

Why did we take on the Maryland Dream Act?

We, Justice for Students in America, made a vow to stand up for what is right-- for what is just. After Jorge Steven Acuña's case, still not resolved, we recognized the need for our community and youth to become aware of cases where students are dehumanized. Throughout Steven's case, discrimination, racism, and prejudice toward undocumented students became evident. "Let him get deported... he should get sent back..." were common arguments we heard. While at the same time, a 3.8 GPA, hard-working, tax-paying student lay handcuffed in a maximum security cell.

Certain community leaders have created efforts to dehumanize these hard-working, tax paying, college bound students. They even frame it as a ‘Hispanic immigrant’ issue. Digging deeper into the subject, one realizes that it does not only encompass Hispanic students-- it shelters all ethnicities. Still, many frame it as a Hispanic issue--an issue of getting these immigrants out of the United States. As time passes though, companies get richer by blaming and deporting these hard-working students and families. The real problem rests in how big their pockets get and how our economy is negatively affected. Allowing these multi-ethnic students an education encompasses a growth in our economy, creation of educational opportunities, and an end to injustices such as discrimination and racism.

Many fail to see the detrimental effects of depriving MILLIONS of students a higher education; of closing the doors to a person's future-- while also dehumanizing them. The argument does not rest in these students taking away our jobs or tearing down our economy. The real argument is, “how long are we going to let this discrimination and dehumanization of hard-working students continue?” How long are we going to keep losing the great potential these students carry--students that only wish to better themselves and better the country which they have grown to call a home? How long?

Justice for Students in America advocates against racism and discrimination. We fight for the ideals of the American Country where a hardworking, tax-paying, honest civilian has the absolute right to prosper and better the country he calls a home. Statistics and studies demonstrate why this is the right thing to do, but it is important that we do not outsmart our own reason… The simple truth is, if we do not support the Maryland Dream Act, we are throwing millions of youth into the streets, depriving them of an education and hindering progress in our state and country. The United States, built upon giving immigrants the opportunity to push us forward, has thrived on opportunity. For this reason, Justice for Students in America has taken on supporting the passage of the Maryland Dream Act on November 6.

On this July 4th, the United States will be turning 236 years old. In only 236 years, we have become one of the most quick to prosper nations in the world. We have built our infrastructure through the hands of immigrants and developed because of this common sentiment to strive for excellence through freedom. We are a nation pushed forward by the thirst of justice, equality, and freedom. We are a nation of ideals, morals, and freedom. Let's maintain these ideals and work together to allow the millions of hard-working students which call their home the great United States of America.

*****MEDIA ADVISORY FOR TOMORROW MAY 23, 11:45 AM EST*****
LATINO YOUTH TO PROTEST RUBIO/ROMNEY DUO AT SUMMIT FOR HARMFUL IMMIGRATION  & ECONOMIC POSITIONS

Washington, DCWhile Sen. Marco Rubio has said that undocumented children and the children of undocumented immigrants were blameless, his legislative record hasn’t followed his rhetoric.  Rubio recently introduced legislation (S. 3083) to restrict the child tax credit to US citizens only.  This tax credit is designed to help children, not their parents, and in 2009 was credited with preventing 1.3 million children from sinking into poverty.
Undocumented youth and U.S. citizen children of undocumented immigrants will be rallying outside the Chamber of Commerce to pressure Rubio to retract S.3083 and distance himself from Romney who has taken an unacceptable and harmful stance on immigration. Rubio and Romney fail to understand that the immigrant community, particularly undocumented youth, are starting businesses at a faster rate than native born citizens. By embracing anti-immigrant legislation they are not only attacking Latino families but also hurting Latino businesses and the U.S. Economy.

WHO: DC & MD DREAMers and U.S. citizen children of undocumented immigrants.
WHAT: Rally to protest Rubio/Romney Duo for their Harmful Immigration and Economic Positions.
WHEN: May 23, 2012 - 11:45 pm ET
WHERE: U.S. Chamber of Commerce at 1615 H Street, NW, Washington, DC 20062.

DRM Capitol Group serves as a voice for undocumented youth and lobbying arm of the dream movement. Our work ensures that undocumented youth are represented in the halls of power and are correctly and directly informed of the actions of Congress, Executive Agencies, and the Courts.

JSA In a Annapolis Demonstration

On Tuesday, April 3rd, JSA gathered its supporters for a demonstration to grab the attention of government workers and officials in Annapolis at 12:00 pm. It was a success, many came to us and asked about JSA. We briefly explained "Jorge Steven Acuna's" case and told them what our plans were for the time to come. We made it clear that JSA is the VOICE and POWER the youth never had.

Stay tuned, as this is one of many events. We will keep you posted, JOIN US and make history.

JSA Movement Hosted Town Hall Meeting with

   U.S. Senator Ben Cardin &
State Senator Anthony Muse

                                           Saturday March 24, 2012 at 12:30 p. m. on the
Montgomery College Rockville Campus

Youth were given the opportunity to ask questions directly to the Senators

Rockville MD, March 22, 2012 – The Justice for Students in America (JSA) movement planned a town hall–style meeting with U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and Maryland Senator Anthony Muse on Saturday, March 24 at 12:30 pm on the Montgomery College Rockville Campus, TC building, room 136. Unfortunately, Maryland Senator Anthony Muse chose not to come to the event even though members of the movement were informed he would attend by his own party. JSA members and other youth were given the opportunity to ask questions directly to the Senators on issues that most affect them from the DREAM ACT, jobs, the economy, to comprehensive immigration reform and other topics.

All Montgomery College students and other youth and their families attend the event. There was an opportunity for all of those who are eligible to register to vote.

The JSA movement is a student- and youth-led, grassroots, empowering group with the mission to give all students and youth in America a voice. JSA promotes and encourages its youth members to become a positive force of civically-active members of society, and seek a high quality of live and equal opportunities for themselves, their families and all Americans through education.
